Welcome to I’ve Got An Issue!
I must say it took me a whole week to calm down from angry fanboy to disappointed adult who understands business and video games that aren’t marketed to me. If you don’t know by now, I am a wrestling fan and huge video game blerd. I have been playing wrestling games since I was a little kid. Over the time they have become simple to awful to innovative to amazing. Some were hit and miss. Some are classics that hold up to this day like Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, WWF No Mercy, Smackdown Here Comes The Pain, Day Of Reckoning 2, Giant Gram 2000, and King Of Colosseum 2 to name a few. Nowadays there is only one wrestling game a year and that is done by 2K Games. This could be a bad thing, but fear not 2K are wonderful. They are known for attention to detail, great gameplay, and most importantly great games! WWE2K14 was amazing for last gen while WWE2k15 was a complete disaster for current gen. Some say that 2K15 was a foundation for the greatness to come from 2K16.
BOY did greatness come!
More game modes, more customization ten times better than that abysmal creation suite from last year, 120+ UNIQUE Models meaning the largest roster ever in a WWE video game, a showcase mode chronicling the career of Stone Cold Steve Austin (who is also on the cover), a revamped career mode, and I’m sure some other features that haven’t been revealed yet.
SO what’s the problem?! This sounds so much better than last year! What could have possibly be wrong? Well here is a mini story. Way before the game was announced the best female wrestler in the world, Sasha Banks, tweeted that she was scanned for the new 2K wrestling game. IF YOU DON’T KNOW, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Charlotte & Bayley were running the women’s division in NXT and since there would be more focus on NXT this year instead of legends they would be in. I know if they scanned Sasha, they had to have scanned the other three ladies as well. Since the scanning/roster process usually starts around Wrestlemania time. I figured they were going to be a part of the female aspect of career mode. PLUS three of the four were called up to the main roster so they had to be priority since those three are on television every week. I was excited those four women would be to be revealed during the IGN’s weekly roster reveal.
I figured OK maybe they are saving it for DLC. They did it last year with Paige as a pre-order while she was divas champion. She was just called up to the main roster as well so it made sense. WWE 2KGames couldn’t have left the influential 4 Horsewomen out of their game. We voiced our opinions and vitriol towards 2K till the team had to issue a statement.
“We pushed as hard as we could to include Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Bayley in WWE 2k16, but it simply did not work out for various reasons. While we are not divulging full details on WWE 2K16’s post-launch plans just yet, we can confirm that the Four Horsewomen will not be available as DLC.
We are proud to have and built the largest WWE roster to date featuring the most Divas ever. The WWE 2K16 disc includes all of the Divas on the main roster at the time we locked it in (13 playable in total).
We all agree the Divas Revolution is great for business and look forward to celebrating the Divas even more in future WWE 2K titles.”
NO 4 Horsewomen. Not even as DLC. NONE OF EM. MY INITIAL REACTION LEAD TO A TWITTER TIRADE AIMED AT THE WWE2KGAMES account. It was bad. Here are some highlights.
- “EVA MARIE IS PRIORITY YET THE CURRENT NXT CHAMP AT THE TIME SASHA BANKS WASN’T. NO EXCUSES”
- “It ain’t worth the money or the time if they are going to be lazy about it. AND I KNOW THEY HAD THE TIME TO PUT THEM IN THE GAME.
- “JUST HOW THE F*CK DO THEY NOT INCLUDE THEM AS DLC, YET HAVE THE NERVE TO GLOAT ABOUT A LARGE DIVAS ROSTER. F*CK OUTTA HERE.”
- “During that entire time, Bayley, Charlotte, Sasha & Becky were running rough shot over there. SO HOW DID THEY NOT MAKE IT IN?
Sheesh I was an angry fan boy the entire time of this tirade. I was working off of anger instead of thought. I had a bad day on top of that so to see that announcement really killed my vibe.
When a female performer like Eva Marie is in the game when she is just making a resurgence on WWE television (She’s in NXT now), over four ladies who have been in NXT longer along with the three on the main roster it really can chap one’s hide. Let’s look at three more replacements. Cameron is barely used on TV and that’s not her fault while we have a clone of Stephanie McMahon from the attitude era, and Layla wasn’t on TV during that locking time. Layla retired. We even have General Adan in the game…a freaking manager that has a wrestler spot over the 4 Horsewomen. The Iron Sheik as Colonel Mustafa is in the game for freaking why? Exactly why is he in the game? There you have 6 slots to put the 4 Horsewomen along with maybe two of the 6 mentioned. Problem solved. Fans happy.
It was after a conversation with my cousin along with a few other people on the internet, I noticed something. I took myself out of it. I looked at the bigger picture. The WWE video games now aren’t marked to hardcore gamers like me. I grew up with wrestling game that had great rosters, gameplay along with being marketed for kids my age along with huge wrestling fans. I also grew up when wrestling games had competition within one another. Those games kept everyone happy from the deep gameplay to kids who just wanted to be their favorite wrestler also people had a choice. Now, it is one game one sound. Sure it is marketed to kids who just want to be able to play as John Cena or Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar and want to learn about the career of Stone Cold Steve Austin. What about those kids who want to play as Bayley or Becky Lynch or Sasha Banks or Charlotte? What about those who want to recreate the Divas revolution storyline? What can you tell them? “Sorry we’ll get it next time” while kids have no idea who Adan or Mustaffa is. Sure you can make them, but why should they have to do that when that team had time to put them in the game? It isn’t the accurate or authentic versions of the 4 ladies. They should be DLC, but it is a shame they aren’t.
I’m more disappointed than pissed off now a days. I understand a WWE roster changes like night and day each month, however they should aspire to get it as accurate as possible. I remember a time when football games didn’t have the Carolina Panthers or the Jacksonville Jaguars because they were brand new to the league. Some people were mad then, but it made sense. This was a time where we will fix it next year was a valid response. DLC did not exist. DLC exists now. This time around saying “we’ll fix it next year” is pretty lame especially when they can just make a very late DLC. Last year’s “Path of Warrior” DLC didn’t come out till April ish, so why not make a DLC pack that features the ladies to drop around April. I can be hopeful, but I already know the answer 2K has for this problem.
